Kookaburra’s Kanteen

Design Brief

The brief was to create a calm reprieve from the commotion of the iconic Chapel St. precinct. Kookaburras Kanteen, as the name suggests, was to be inspired by the client’s deep and nostalgic appreciation for Australia’s native flora and fauna.

Design Challenges

Nestled within a heritage-listed Victorian building (est. 1886), the primary challenge was to transform the site into a safe, inhabitable and compliant space. The design challenge was to ensure that the space connected with the history and cultural significance of the site whilst offering something unexpected and unique.

Design Results

The soft morning palette, bold Victorian formal gestures and playful mix of patterns, textures and materials come together to offer a contemporary space which feels authentic, unpretentious and deeply rooted in the Australian vernacular.
